Birth: Dec. 26, 1870
Death: Feb. 24, 1963

Born on the 26th of December in 1870 in Lyon County, KS, Mary Lipsey was the third child and second daughter of James Benjamin Lipsey and Sarah Rebecca Reed. The birth of Mary Leona Lipsey was bittersweet for her parents, as it occured only three days after the death of her eldest brother William at just three years of age.

Mary Leona Lipsey married Marion Isaac Burris just days before each of them turned twenty-one years of age in 1891. Born just thirteen days apart, Mary and Marion would have known each other from early childhood. The farms they grew up on were in very close proximity to one another, which meant they would have attended the same grade at the same school almost every day until adulthood.

They gave birth to their first child, a daughter named Pearl, in January of 1894. By 1900, Ike and Mary (Lipsey) Burris were living in Shellrock Township of Greenwood County, KS with their six year-old daughter, Pearl.

On the 30th day of July in 1905, Schuyler Marion Burris was born to Ike and Mary in Greenwood County, KS. He was the second and final child they would have. By 1910, Marion Isaac and Mary (Lipsey) Burris were living in Madison Township of Greenwood County, KS. Living with them were their two children Pearl and Schuyler, as well as four of Ike's brothers.

Mary Leona (Lipsey)Burris and her husband Marion Isaac were still living at Madison Township in Greenwood County, Kansas with their fourteen year-old son Schuyler when the 1920 Census was taken. Their daughter Pearl was 26 and living in Emporia, KS in Lyon County with her husband Alva McCray.

The 1925 Kansas State Census recorded Mary (Lipsey) and her husband living with their son Schuyler at Madison, KS. Mary's husband passed away later that year. Five years later in 1930, the widow Mary (Lipsey) Burris was still living in Madison, KS at the age of 59. The census record indicates that she had two younger gentlemen ‘lodgers' living with her, which is how she made her living until her death in 1963.
