Carver — Robert Mitchell Potkay Sr., 50, of Carver, died at home Saturday, January 16, 1993, after a long illness. He was the husband of Judith A. (Aptt) Potkay and son of Mitchell and Lillian (Taylor) Potkay of Fairhaven.
Born and educated in Fairhaven, Mr. Potkay was a master chief quarter master in the Coast Guard for 25 years until his retirement. He was supervisor for Aids to Navigation for the Coast Guard in the Northeast.
Mr. Potkay was a recipient of the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Coast Guard Good Conduct Medal, Pistol Sharp Shooter Ribbon, Rifle Marksman Ribbon, Coast Guard Achievement Medal, Antarctic Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, recipient of two Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation, and Civil Action Medal.
An avid gardener, Mr. Potkay was also a member of the Plymouth Rod & Gun Club Pistol Team.
Survivors include his widow,; his parents; two daughters, Sheri L. O'Donnell and Robert M. Potkay Jr., both of Glouster; one brother William Potkay of New Bedford; one sister, Nancy Gordon of Fairhaven; and five grandchildren.
