Utica Observer Dispatch Thursday October 12, 1939 JACOB OATMAN BARGE CANAL PIOLOT DIES UNEXPECTEDLY ONEIDA -- Jacob Oatman, 64, a Barge Canal Captain, brother of Mrs. Hugo F. Keller, 417 Broad St., dropped dead on his boat in Brewerton harbor, Oct. 11, 1939. He was born in the Town of Verona and first entered the canal trade on the old Erie. When a young man he commanded two boats for years on the Erie, working in the waterway trade in New York harbor. He was captain of the first Standard Oil Company fleet on the Barge Canal and had been captain of tugs owned by independent lines in recent years. Surviving are his wife, Susie, four daughters and one son, all of Waterford, besides the sister.
