A bedroom fire claimed the life of Charles Walter Snyder on Saturday, May 5, 1945. After futilely trying to rescue her husband, Etta (Younkin) was rushed to the Price Hospital in Confluence, where she was treated for severe burns.
Although his body had been badly burned Charles cause of death was said to be due to suffocation from smoke. This was the second tragedy in less than three months for this family to endure, the first being the loss of Charles and Etta's son Frank on March 22.
