Julia Young Atwater, 67, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Gila Regional Medical Center. She was born June 19, 1946 in Silver City, NM to Manuel Young and Concepcion Altamirano. Julie was a caring, loving, hardworking mother, grandmother and wife. She began working at Chino Mines in 1973 and was the first worman to be allowed to work in operations after WWII. She started her career as a janitress at the mill and retired in 2009 working as a switchboard operator at the Chino Power Plant. Julie proved her hard work ethic by working shift work for over 35 yrs. After her retirement she spent many of her days visiting and caring for her mother Chonita at Ft. Bayard Medical Center. Although she was not an official member of the Elks Lodge, Julie spent many evenings helping with the fundraising and general events at the lodge. Those who gathered there on Thursday nights will surely miss Julie's cooking. She is survived by her loving husband, Dennis of the family home; two sons, Larry Benavidez and wife Tamra of Morenci, AZ; Danny Benavidez and wife Rachel of Silver City; eleven grandchildren, James Benavidez (Stephanie) of Hurley; Ashley Cabrera (Gabriel) of Hurley; Gabriel Benavidez of Santa Clara; Jade, Jazmine and Jalyssa Benavidez, Magen and Davis Atwater, Brianna and Tyler Atwater and Orion Fountain; five great-grandchildren; her mother, Concepcion Young of Fort Bayard; two step-sons, David Atwater (Stephanie) of Silver City; Jimmy Atwater (Sunny) of Silver City; one brother, Sonny Young and his wife Sally of Silver City; three sisters, Nena Escobar and husband Emeterio of Fierro; Lilly Gibson of Las Cruces and Sally Duran of Arenas Valley. She was preceded in death by her father, Manuel Young; one sister, Ramona Sterling. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 1 from 5-6pm at Terrazas Funeral Chapels with the prayer vigil and holy rosary to begin at 6pm with Dr. Gilbert Arizaga reciting. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 2 at 10am at Santa Clara Catholic Church with Father Robert Becerra officiating. Inurnment will take place at Fierro cemetery. Pallbearers will be James and Jade Benavidez, Gabriel Benavidez, Andy Housley, David and Jimmy Atwater. Honorary pallbearers will be Libby Lewis, Gary Ford, Jim McLain, Kenny Hyden and family, friends, Elk's Lodge extended family. Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory.
