Elemetta 'Mett' Heffner, died at the age of the age of 85 at the St. Joseph Hospital in St. Joseph Missouri on May 3, 1982 due to arteriosclerotic heart disease. She was the daughter of William Arthur Mitchell and Zerelda Katherine Roberts Mitchell, both of Missouri. she was born on April 20, 1897 in Plattsburg, Clinton County, Missouri and she had 12 siblings: Elias 'Los' Mitchell (1890-1945), Elonzo 'Lon' Mitchell (1892-1939), Sarah Eyleen 'Lini' Mitchell Morris (1893-1957), Nancy Josephine 'Jose' Mitchell (1895-1984), Bessie Lonie Mitchell (1897-1981), Laura May Mitchell (1898-1899), Mary Adelphia Mitchell (1900-1983), Levi 'Jum' Marion Mitchell (1903-1980), Rosie Etta Mitchell (1905-1964), Ivan Laverne Mitchell (1906-1906), and Charles Howard 'Bud' Mitchell (1908-1999).
She was a lifelong resident of Clinton County, Missouri. She had previously been married and had 5 children: Oakley Mitchell (1913-1999), Lilly Lolita Mitchell Watson (1917-1999), Leona Faye Mitchell Stephenson (1920-2002), Lulu Margaret Mitchell (1922-1979), and Opal Lois Mitchell (1928-2008)..... but only she knew name of this husband. By the time of the 1920 Federal Census, Oakley and Lily where living with Elmetta's mother/father and her younger siblings at her father's house and there is no mention of husband on this census. It looks like she had Oakley when she was 16 years old. Additional research into the lineage of this missing husband is ongoing.
She then married Wilbur Benjamin 'Benny' Heffner on April 20, 1931. She raised his three children as if they were her own: one stepson Alvie Heffner and two stepdaughters Alice Heffner Monroe and Nancy Mable Streeter.
Surviving at the time of her death was the son Oakley Mitchell and five of her daughters: Lillie Watson and Opal Hartman, both of St. Joseph, Leona Stephenson and Nancy Streeter, both of Plattsburg, and Wanda Belk, Kansas City; a step daughter, Alice Heffner, Monroe, Kansas City; a brother Charles H. Mitchell, St. Joseph; two sisters, Josephine Maddox, St. Joseph, and Mary Lewis, Grower, Missouri; 38 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren.
Services were held at 2:00 pm at the Cox Funeral Home in Plattsburg, Missouri. Burial was held at the Green Lawn Cemetery, Plattsburg, Missouri. Visitation was held May 4, 1982 at the funeral home.
