After her husbands death, Mona Belle stayed on the farm and continued to raise her 4 children as well as care for parents throught their elder years.

*In 1962, she became secretary to the Board of Eudcation, for nearly 30 years.
*In October, 1961, she took charge of the Thornfield Post Office, becoming postmaster in 1962 and was still serving as of October 1991
The post office she built in 1964 sits close to Highway 95 on the cliff overlooking Little Creek at the back. Inside is an old postal window dated back to George Pearcy, an early postmaster of Thorfield.
