Chief Warrant Officer (3) McCall was the pilot of an OH-58 helicopter when it exploded in flight during a ferrying mission and crashed into the woods near the town of Eschenbach in der Oberpfalz (about 50 miles NE of Nuremberg), in the district of Neustadt, Bavaria, Germany. Two other service members also died in this crash. An investigation revealed that the crash was not due to pilot error.
Chief McCall was also a veteran of the Vietnam War.
