Henry was the husband of Sally Elizabeth Ackley. They were married in New York around 1850 and had a small farm in Laurens, New York. Henry, his wife and two daughters, Nancy and Louisa, moved "West" with Sally's parents, brothers and sisters in 1855 and settled in Union, Iowa. A third child, Phillip Gordon Schermerhorn, was born in 1860. Henry served in the American Civil War. Before and after the war, Henry worked as a blacksmith in Union, Iowa. Henry is buried in Westside CemeteryŚalso known as the Ackley CemeteryŚwith many of Sally's extended family.
