John started his broadcasting career as an announcer and accountant for WGRY in Gary, Ind. He and Pat moved to McCook, Neb., where John was employed at KBRL and KICX for 12 years. John was interviewed and hired over the phone by WTAD in Quincy, and his first day on the air was Aug. 31, 1970.

While working for WTAD, John was especially known for his accuracy in ringing the bong to report the time. For years he was a fixture at local government meetings and on his retirement from those duties in 2007, John was recognized for his work by the Quincy City Council, the Adams County Board and the Quincy School Board.

His focus on proper timekeeping led to his recognition by several Quincy mayors for his reminder at the start of each council meeting "It's 7:30, Mr. Mayor!" In 2007, John was recognized as an Illinois Older Worker of the Year for his many years of service to WTAD as a senior citizen. His final broadcast on WTAD was on Aug.19, 2012.

John was recognized by the city of Quincy for his years of service to the community.

He grew up near Wrigley Field and was an avid Cubs fan and an enthusiastic model railroader.
