Roswell was the son of Roswell and Elizabeth Mason Abel. He married Margaret J. Loose (also found as Luce) on Sept. 30, 1846 in Greencastle, PA.. Margaret was born in Greencastle on Jan. 22, 1820.

Roswell had two sisters Elizabeth "Lizette" b. Dec. 4, 1809 and Chloe E. b. Apr. 19, 1811 both born in Granville, NY. Elizabeth married Calvin Peabody in Oct. 1829 in Essex Co., NY and moved to Ill. with her family. Chloe married John Armstrong after arriving in Springfield. In the 1880 census Roswell Jr. was living with his father and wife, and living next door to his widowed sister Chloe.

Roswell adopted Pauline unk. b. in Germany and emigrated to the US with her mother and siblings. Pauline's father died in Germany and her mother could not support the family. She adopted out her children to different families after reaching the US. Pauline was adopted by Roswell and Margaret Abel. Pauline's mother died in St. Louis, MO. in 1887.

In 1883 Roswell's father passed away and Roswell and his wife moved to Wichita, KS. where he passed away in 1887 and she on Jan. 18,1893.
