James Henry was the son of James Froom Adams and Sarah (Barton) Adams (1805 Canada-1873 Blakesburg, IA). Both of his parents were born in Grenville, Canada and married there as well. Some time after 1826 and before 1838 the family moved from Canada to IA. where James married Eleanor Tinsley on Oct. 31, 1851 in Wappello Co., IA. They had 4 children Urania, Omar Thomas Sr. born July 27, 1860, Ambrose b. Aug. 14, 1863 and was never found after the 1870 census, and Minnie Adelaide b. Oct. 4, 1867. Omar T. was living with one of his daughters in CA. when the 1940 census was taken. He passed away July 5, 1955 in Kern Co., CA. He was never mentioned by name in his parents obits nor did he seem to attend their funerals. Minnie married twice first marrying William Shaw. They had one child together Lula Elizabeth Shaw born Nov. 27, 1886 in Camas, Oneida Co., ID. William than passed away in 1900 and Minnie married George Baker and had two more children Herbert born 1893 in ID. and Della born in 1904 in ID. It is unknown what happen to Della, but her brother and half sister are on FAG.

I have noted that Ambrose is being mistaken for an Ambrose Adams that was born and raised in KY and died there as well. That Ambrose was born in 1862 and was the son of Aris Adams. I believe Ambrose Adams son of James H. Adams died young. A memorial has been made for Ambrose, but if he is buried in Harlan Cemetery it is unmarked.

James Henry Adam's obit.

The body of Mr. J.H. Adams, father of Mrs. W.L. Baughn, and a pioneer resident of this county, was brought to Harlan for interment yesterday. Funeral services were held at the home of ex-mayor Baughn yesterday afternoon. The body of deceased was laid to rest beside that of his wife, whose death occurred some years ago.

James Henry Adams was born in Quebec, Canada, Oct. 20, 1830, and died at Idaho Falls, Idaho, Feb. 22, 1912; 81 years, 4 months, 2 days. He came to Shelby county in 1852, and took part in all the pioneer movements of the time. When the contest for the location of the county seat was on in those early days, Mr. Adams was a zealous friend of Harlan and was instrumental in securing a majority vote for this city. He left the county for the West in 1875. He leaves two sons and two daughters. For most of his life and up to within a few days of his death Mr. Adams kept a daily record of events concerning himself. If it is accessible it must contain many interesting notes of early life in this county that can be found nowhere else.
The pall bearers were: Bradley McCord, O.P. Wyland, Dan Terrell, Prior Tinsley, A.W. Barton, P.T. Nelson.

As the obit mentions the remains of James were laid to rest beside his wife, but evidently the headstone was never engraved with his name so only his wife's name appears.
Also the obit refers to having left four children, but I have never found Ambrose beyond the one census.

I believe he is buried in Section 1 Lot 55 space 11 as his wife is in Sec. 1 Lot 55 space 12. Buried in plot 10 is an M.H. Adams. Buried in plot 4 Charles Baughn, 5 W.L. Baughn, and 6 Urania Adams Baughn. Plots 7-9 are unknown and plot 1 E.S. Adams (perhaps infant daughter of M.H. and L.A Adams) and 3 Sarah Adams. Perhaps the Sarah Adams buried in plot 3 is James' mother.

He was my 2x g. grandfather.
