William Gordon Bedford was born on December 29, 1844 in Bradley County, Tennessee to the Rev. James Bedford and Elizabeth "Betsy" Hunt.

In late 1865 W.G. married Sarah Elizabeth Shaw. Looking to escape the rampaging Indians W.G. and many of his siblings fled first to the St. Louis, Missouri area and then to War Eagle Township, Arkansas before finally settling back down in Parker County, Texas in the mid 1870's.
