Two Beaverdale Miners Crushed Under Rock Fall
Joseph Krelich, 58,
And John Caroff, 64,
Victims of Accident
BEAVERDALE- Two employees of the Johnstown Coal & Coke Company were crushed to death yesterday under a fall of rock in the company's No. 6 mine here. Victims were John Caroff, 64, of Lloydell, and Joseph Krelich, 58, of Beaverdale.
The accident is believed to have occurred at 11:30 o'clock, but it was not until an hour later that John Nelson, an assistant mine foreman, made the discovery. Caroff's chest and pelvis were crushed and Krelich was crushed about the pelvic region.
Coroner Patrick McDermott conducted a preliminary investigation and will await the findings of a state mine inspector before determining the necessity for an inquest.
Rescue crews worked for almost an hour before they could remove the boulder, which was nine feet long, seven feet wide and 14 inches thick, from the bodies of the men. Caroff and Krelich were engaged in pulling pillar prior to the accident. It is believe that both had just finished eating lunch and were sitting down at the time they were killed.
Mr. Caroff was born in France and had been a resident of this country since he was 16 years of age. He had been a miner for 48 years. In addition to his widow, he leaves three sons- Francis, at home; Cpl. James, with the Army in the Pacific, and Capt. Wayne, with the air forces overseas.
Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Donnelly Funeral Home of Beaverdale.
Mr. Krelich was born in Europe on June 20, 1886, and came to America in 1905, locating in Dunlo. He was a son of Matthew and Theresa (Stutella) Krelich. The deceased was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union and the Corpus Christi Catholic Church of Dunlo. He is survived by a brother, Paul, Jeannette.
Friends are being received at the Dunlo C.F.U. Hall. Funeral services will be conducted at 9'o clock Saturday morning at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church at Dunlo. Interment will be in the church cemetery under the direction of the Dimond Funeral Home of South Fork.
