Death: Feb. 3, 1908

NOTE: There are discrepancies regarding Ruth's date of death. A South Dakota Death Index (Certificate Number 10495) lists Ruth's date of death as 8 February 1908. The below obituary from the Doland Times-Record of 14 Feb 1908 also places her date of death on 8 February 1908. The headstone lists date of death as 3 February 1908, reason unknown.

"On Saturday last occurred the death of Mrs. William Matteson of Irving, aged 25 years. Mrs. Matteson was born at St. Charles, Minnesota, and came here about four years ago. She was married to Mr. Matteson about one year ago and they resided on the Joseph James farm until last fall when they moved to Irving. She leaves one boy five years old and a little baby girl ten days old, besides a husband and numerous relation to mourn her loss, who have the sympathy of the entire community."

RUTH RANDALL MATTESON - daughter of Mary M. (Short) and Charles B. Randall, she was born in Minnesota in January of 1883. She was enumerated with her parents in 1885 living in St. Charles, Winona Co., Minnesota. Her father having died in December of 1891, her mother married Civil War Veteran, Nathan G. Osmer who had served as a private in Co. E of the 37th Reg't in the Illinois infantry. In 1895, the family was residing in Elmira, Olmsted Co., Minnesota, but was again enumerated in St. Charles in 1900.

At age sixteen Ruth appears to have been united in marriage to Math Burns in La Crosse Co., Wisconsin on the 23rd of November, 1900. Despite no mention of this marriage in family papers, a Wisconsin marriage certificate for Math Burns, born in Monroe Co., Wisconsin married to Ruth Randall of Winona Co., Minnesota lists groom's parents as Peter Burns and Katie Risvelt and the bride's parents as Charles Randall and Mary Short. It's possible, given the fact that her mother had been ill for awhile, that Ruth secured her future by marrying at an early age. Less than a year and a half later, Ruth's mother passed away in St. Charles and was laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery.

She was listed in the 1905 South Dakota State census as Mrs. Ruth Burns, a twenty year-old housewife, possibly residing in Prarie Center, but her marriage to Burns ended in divorce as indicated by her marriage license to William Matteson, age 31, both of Doland, Spink Co., South Dakota. They were married on 15 May 1907 and the license recorded in June, but given the date of her death on 03 Feb (or 08 Feb) 1908, Ruth may have died during childbirth but the cause is not known. She was barely twenty-five years of age when she was laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Harrison Township, Doland, Spink Co., South Dakota, a beautiful stone erected in her memory.
