Funeral Held Saturday For Edwin Ashwood

Edwin Ashwood, honored resident of Schuyler County during the greater part of his well spent life of seventy-eight years, died Thursday, evening at his home on North Liberty street following a brief illness from acute indigestion.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. D. V. Gowdy, of Quincy, were held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the residence. Interment was made in the Ashwood family lot in the Rushville cemetery.

The following obituary was read at the service:

Joseph Edwin, second son of Joseph and Julian {Julia} Harding Ashwood, was born in Canton {see note}, Illinois, August 10, 1854, and passed away at his home in Rushville July 21, 1932.

In early boyhood he moved with his parents to Schuyler county where he has ever since resided. As a boy he attended the country school and later a term at Hedding college at Abington. As his father was engaged in teaching music and day school he was away from home a great deal. This left the responsibility of the farm to Edwin and his older brother, Thomas, now deceased. This vocation he followed until he retired from active life.

On June 8, 1881, he was married to Letitia Langner of Schuyler county. To this union were born three children, Fred L. Paul and Grace, wife of Glen Sutherland. He, with his family, resided on a farm in Rushville township until the spring of 1900 when they moved to Rushville.

When a young man he was converted in a meeting in Oakland township. He united with the Methodist church in which he took an active part as long as his health permitted. Even though he was deprived of the privilege of church attendance in recent years, he ever expressed his abiding faith and willingness to meet his Lord.

About ten years ago his health failed and for most of the time since then he was an invalid until he passed peacefully to rest in his seventy-eighth year.

He is survived by his wife, three children, four grandchildren, Loren and Paul Jr. Ashwood, Keith and Dee Sutherland; three brothers, John, Charles, and Horace, and one sister, Mrs. Anna Sherman.

(Note: He was born in Adams County, Illinois, probably Clayton not Canton.)
