Mary Adeline, known as Addie, was born in Indiana in 1848 to James H. and Edna Manahan Alexander who were born in Tennessee. They are also buried in Coleman Cemetery. The family moved with her parents to Missouri, back to Indiana and then to Illinois.
Addie married on 29, Mar. 1866 in Clay Co. Ill., James D. Whitman b. 1846 in Illinois. They had eight children: Effie Jane b. 1867, Wm. Asa b. 1869-10 Apr. 1934 (buried in Bellingham, Washington), Cassius "Cash" Newton b. 1851- 1936( wife Ida M.,lived in Grant Co. Neb.) Edney Alice b. 1873, Hershel b. abt. 1876, Lulu A. b. 1878, James Ernest "Ernie", and Joseph Franklin, b. 12 Nov. 1882- Apr. 1982(lived in Bremerton, Washington) All their children were born in Missouri.
Her husband, James, died suddenly at about age 36 in 1882, when the family was living in Union Twp., Nodaway Co.
Addie married again to Samuel Gonser, his third wife, and they lived in Pickering and Parnell, Mo. Together they had four children: Harry b. 21 Feb. 1886- 15 Nov. 1960( married Margaret Eliz. Catron), Clarence b. 20 Sept. 1887- 8 Mar. 1979 ( married Ethelyn "Mildred" Smith), Charles b. 3 June 1890- 11 May 1968, and Nellie Belle b. 23 Apr. 1894- 10 Oct. 1972
(married Ray Franklin Killam). All four of them moved to King or Whatcom Co., Washington. Harry, Clarence, and Nellie Belle Killam are buried in the Sumas, Wa. Cemetery. Charles is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Seattle. Her husband Samuel is buried in White Oak Cemetery, Pickering, Nodaway Co., Mo.
