Age 97, formerly of Horseheads, NY passed away on Wednesday August 13, 2008 as the result of a fall at home. Rudy was born December 23, 1910 in Millvale, PA the son of the late Harry G. and Bertha Nagel Baer. He studied engineering and played football at Penn State University, after which he moved to the Horseheads area in the early 1930's. Rudy married his wife Genevieve Marie Ball Baer on January 12, 1936 and celebrated 68 years of marriage until her death on September 3, 2004. He was also pre-deceased by his brothers George Baer and Harry Baer as well as his sister Ruth Masters. Rudy was a veteran of WW II, serving his country as an Officer in the U.S. Army overseas. He was a member of The First United Methodist Church of Horseheads where he also served as Lay-Leader. Rudy was an active Mason for over 70 years and was a member and Past Master of Horseheads Old Oak Lodge # 364 F. & A.M., Past District Deputy, member of The Cashmere Grotto, Corning Consistory, Kalurah Temple, Grand Lodge, Royal Arch, and Shriners Club. He was very dedicated to his community and served on The Horseheads School Board, was a founder of The Horseheads Youth Bureau, The Zim Center and The Horseheads Historical Society. Mr. Baer also served as Supervisor for The Town of Horseheads for many years. He was a member of The Horseheads Rotary Club and Horseheads Lions Club, and the Bentley-Trumble American Legion Post # 442 of Horseheads. Mr. Baer owned and operated Rudy Baer's Corner in Hanover Square in Horseheads for almost two decades. Prior to opening Rudy Baer's Corner he was the manager of the Epco Food Service in Elmira Heights. Rudy is survived by his loving and devoted daughter Marcie A. Baer of Gambrills, MD; his nieces: Connie Baer Mann, Linnell Masters Jones, Joan Burton Scanlin, Laura Ball and their families; nephew: Arthur Brown and family. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Lynch Funeral Home at 318 West Broad Street, Horseheads, NY on Saturday November 1, 2008 from 4-6 PM and Sunday November 2, 2008 from 1-3 PM. Officers and members of Horseheads Old Oak Lodge #364 will meet at the Funeral Home on Saturday November 1, 2008 at 5:45 PM to conduct a Memorial Service for their Departed Brother, Rudy. A Memorial Service celebrating Rudy's Life will be held at The First United Methodist Church of Horseheads at 1034 West Broad Street Horseheads, NY at 3:30 PM on Sunday November 2, 2008. The Rev. Dr. Robert O. Sherburne will officiate.
