Birth: Nov. 22, 1900
Roanoke City
Virginia, USA
Death: Jun. 27, 1974
Portsmouth City
Virginia, USA

Mamie Wood was born in Virginia on Nov 22, 1900 to Annie Elizabeth Brown 1868 - Nov 14, 1922 and William Henderson Wood Apr 22, 1872 Sep 17, 1945.

Mamies' siblings were William (Billy) and Theodore.

On Aug 9, 1919 she entered into marriage with Charles Mathew Sr. Atkins Sep 9, 1899 Jan 1, 1955; son of Lula Venora Miller Sep 3, 1872 Apr 25, 1954 and George Dunsmore Atkins May 28, 1863 Jan 26, 1930; and from this union ten children were born; Charles Mathew Jr. 1921 1976, Christine Anita, 1923 - , Edna Mae 1925 1970, Reginald Carl 1927 1997, Cecelia Jacqueline 1930 - , Norma Jean 1931 - , Barbara Arlene 1931 2007, Audrey Marie 1937 - , Ronald Lee 1939 1997, Gloria Ann Camarillo 1941 2001.

She was a native of Roanoke area moving with her husband and family to Alexander Park in about 1940 where she remained in the area for her remaining days.

Mamie was a homemaker, loving wife as well as grandmother, surrounded by and providing care to the majority of her 26 grandchildren throughout her life time. She traveled to Ohio on several occasions and once to California in 1964 with her daughter and son in law; Jean and Jimmy Gay; for what turned out to be her last visit with her daughter and family; Barbara Crawford. At those times I was not old enough to know my grandmother on a personal level.

On Jun 27, 1974, while I was in flight to spend my summer vacation in Ohio and Virginia, Mamie Woods Atkins passed away. I changed my itinerary and was honored to be one of the six grandsons chosen as Pallbearers for our grandmothers' funeral; James Barry and Gary Wayne Stafford, Donald Wayne Woleslagle, John Charles Atkins, Danny Scott Haynes and myself, Mark Steven Crawford.

Mamie was interned in the Olive Branch Cemetery along side of her husband Charles Mathew Sr. and grandson Dwayne Lee Atkins, later to be joined by her son and daughter in law; Katherine Estelle Hinkle and Charles Mathew Jr.

We Love You!
