János Fintor, son of József Fintor (1820-1875) and Mária Petró (1822-1885)
was born at Ibrony, Szabolcs County, Hungary, a small village in present day Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary. On Jan 31, 1893 he married Ilona (Helen) Gacsályi in Ibrony. Sometime prior to 1893 he and his wife moved to Fülpösdarócz, Szatmár county where they lived in the mansion of a noble land owner. According to the family, János worked as the overseer of the estate supervising field hands on horseback. His wife Ilona was the cook.
Leaving his wife and seven children behind in Hungary, János came to America on May 2, 1906 at the age of 39, to work and earn passage for his family. He joined his brother-in-law, Laszlo Bunna in Chicago, Illinois and subsequently moved to Springdale, Allegheny County, PA where he worked as a laborer in the glass factory. In 1912 his step-son Sándor Gacsályi (24) and daughter, Ilona (18) arrived in Springdale from Fülpösdarócz and in 1913, his wife, Ilona Gácsalyi-Fintor arrived with his three youngest children, Etelka (14), József (12) & István (7). In 1923, two months after his death, his sons Lajos (26) and Jenő (21), who had been detained in Hungary by WWI arrived from Erdobenye, Szabolcs County and joined the family in Springdale. His son Lajos had been wounded and held prisoner during his service in the Austro-Hungarian army. War wounds were noted on the Ellis Island manifest.
János was 55 years old at the time of his death.
