John E. Deering, 83, died at Roosevelt General Hospital Monday morning. He was born Oct. 11, 1896, in Marysville, Texas. His parents homesteaded in the Olive community in 1915, and he joined them in 1917 and lived at a separate homestead.
Deeing was a veteran of World War I, serving mostly in southern France. In Carlsbad, N.M., on Feb. 12, 1936, he was married to Callie Ellen Grimes. For 26 years, they lived on the original Deering homestead. In 1962, they moved to a farm north of Portales on the Cannon Air Force Base road, where he resided until his death.
He was a member of the Baptist Church, the Elida Masonic Lodge and served as Worshipful Master of that lodge and a member of the Elida Order of Eastern Star. He served as Rainbow Dad for two years for the Elida Rainbow assembly. He was also a member of the World War I Barracks of Portales and was a long-time member of the Elida American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of the home; three daughters, Mrs. Donnie Frances Cresap and Mrs. Cora Ellen Stroud, both of Portales, Mrs. Linda Kay Brown, Garland, Texas, and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisterrs, Mrs. Nannie Vaughan, Portales, and Mrs Eva Melton, Roswell.
Services will be Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at Wheeler's Starlight Chapel with the Rev. Hugh Frazier officiating. Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Glendon Deering, J.O. Vaughan,Jr., Vonnie Brown, Jim Melton, Danny Cresap and Johnny Stroud. Honorary pallbearers will be all friends. The Elida Masonic Lodge will conduct graveside services.
