She was the 9th of 10 children of David Worthly Mitchem, Sr. and Martha Ann Willett Mitchem, of Lowell, NC. She was married four times, and had one daughter who died at birth (with husband #3). Her husbands were: (1) Thomas Robert Shuford (1875 - 1949, buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Gastonia, NC); (2) A.M. "Joe" Hayward; (3) Daniel Flynn; and (4) Charles Frankel Abbott (1904 - 1979, buried at Edgewood Cem., Lowell, NC). She always loved her many nieces and nephews. She was a very colorful and beautiful lady. Her picture was once on the cover of Harper's Bazaar Magazine (see photo at bottom right). She was a graduate of Greensboro Women's College (now University of North Carolina) and taught school for a short while. She also worked as a professional photographer for Shuford's Studio; and for several department stores. She loved to travel and meet people. She lived most of her adult life in Charlotte, NC, but died in a nursing home in Hendersonville, NC.
