Torbrook Mines -

May 17 - An impressive Memorial service was held in the Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon for the late Able Seaman Merle Banks, son of J.D. and the late Mrs. Banks. The service was conducted by the pastor of the church, Rev. A.G. McClare. The pulpit was draped with the Union Jack for which Merle gave his life when the "Louisburg" was bombed. During the service a Memorial Wreath was placed beneath the Honor Roll in the church by Petty Officer Curtis Johnson of the R.C.N.

Note: He died East of Gibralter, when an Italian torpedo bomber sank the Royal Canadian Navy Corvette "Louisburg" on Saturday 06 February 1943.
