Mrs. J. T. Mitchell.
Mrs. Abby Mitchell, wife of J. T. Mitchell died at their home on East Second street, Smithton on Tuesday, May 2. She was 70 years old and was the mother of ten children and thirty-two grand children. She had been a member of Bethlehem Baptist church for 35 years. Her funeral was preached by Rev. Caleb Cramer, a Baptist Minister, and an old friend of the deceased, to a large congregation of relatives and friends, mostly from other communities where they had formerly resided. The pallbearers were six grandchildren. The interment was in the Smithton cemetery.
Mrs. Mitchell was a wealthy woman in the true sense of the word. She was rich in the love of her children and grandchildren. When the health of the parents failed about a year ago the children urged them to leave the farm and move to Smithton, where they have been tenderly cared for, and Mr. Mitchell told us, during his wife's last illness the grand-daughters came and nursed her until the close. She was rich in love and esteem of her former neighbors, as shown by their coming long distances to attend the funeral and pay tribute to her memory. The beautiful traits of character with which she bound her children and neighbors to her go with her and add to the richness of her associations in heaven forever. Then being a christian she is an heir of every blessing that heaven possesses. --SMITHTON TIMES. (printed in the Versailles Statesman on May 18, 1922)
