Jane was born in Chester County, South Carolina, next to the youngest of about eight children, She had four older sisters, Elizabeth, Dorcus, Susan and Winifred. Jane married her first spouse, William Coats, Sr., in South Carolina and they migrated to Ouachita Parish, Louisiana, in 1812 with her extended family. She and William settled in the Indian Village area of Ouachita Parish and had three children before William's death before 1820. Jane married her second husband, Stephen Wood Maddox, a nearby neighbor whose first wife had been murdered. Jane and Stephen had two children before his death ten years later on March 19, 1835. Jane remained a widow after Stephen's death and was still living in the Indian Village area when she died some thirty-two years later. Note: There is an old headstone for "Jane Mattox" in Monroe Catholic Cemetery bearing dates that would indicate it is this Individual and probably at her grave.
