ACHTZENER - (Wendling/Huber)--Katherine Barbara of Regina, Saskatchewan, passed peacefully into God's care on June 25, 2002, at the age of 84 years with her children at her side. Born January 8, 1918, in Spring Valley to Martin and Dorothea (Scherle) Huber; Katherine was adopted at birth by Michael and Emilia (Huber) Wendling. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church where she later married Philip John Achtzener on January 16, 1940.
Kay attended Wetmore Elementary School and Balfour Technical High School. Prior to her marriage, she worked at the Regina General Hospital, and after raising her family, was employed by the Saskatchewan Department of Finance. During her retirement years she attended seniors classes at the University of Regina. She was a lifetime learner.
She was a very active member of her church (Trinity Lutheran and later Christ Lutheran); and a life member of the Horticultural and Gladiolus Societies. She encouraged family and friends, especially children, to be active participants in education, the arts, gardening, sports, and the community. In addition, Katherine enjoyed world travel and hosted Sunday soup for family and friends.
Katherine was predeceased by her parents, husband Philip (1974), daughter Jeanette (1990), three sisters: Kate, Minnie and Emily, and three brothers: Michael, Philip and Frank.
Katherine leaves to celebrate her life her brother Fred and sisters Olga and Freda; 8 children: Ed (Cheryl) Achtzner of BC, Phyllis (Terry) Hutchings of ON, Phil Achtzehner (Donna) of Regina, Norman (Sheila) Achtzener of AB, Kathy (Don) Miller of BC, Marie (Wally) Mann of Regina, Trudy (Alick) Muxlow of BC, and David Achtzener of Regina; 38 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and many special relatives, neighbors, and friends.
The family gratefully acknowledges the work done by the Palliative Care Unit of the Regina Health District, the Alan Blair Memorial Clinic, and all related staff who went out of their way to support our family.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue on Friday, June 28, at 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 4825 Dewdney Avenue on Saturday, June 29, 2002, at 10 a.m. Interment of cremains in Riverside Memorial Park.
