Baltimore Sun Obituary (June 2, 1992)
William R. Merritt
Services for William R. Merritt, a retired millwright and welder for a meat packing company, will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Leonard J. Ruck Funeral Home, 5305 Harford Road.
The resident of South Bouldin Street died Saturday of cancer at a son's home in Joppatowne. He was 77.
He retired in 1976 at the Schluderberg-Kurdle Co., which produced Esskay meat products. He had worked there since the end of World War II.
A native of Canton, he often recalled for his family the dirt streets and cow pastures of his youth in that waterfront community of southeastern Baltimore.
He worked in canning plants in Canton as a young man and during World War II he worked at the Bethlehem Steel Corp. shipyard at Sparrows Point.
He played soccer for the Ruggerios and the Colonials, and in the 1950s he officiated at college games.
His wife, the former Ethel May Schoff, died in 1982.
He is survived by two sons, Robert E. Merritt of Joppatowne and William G. Merritt of Forest Hill; two daughters, Dorothy A. Romanowski of Forest Hill and Carolyn M. Merritt of Baltimore; and seven grandchildren.
