He proudly served his country in the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Earl and Rayford Bates, and a grandson, Aaron Bates.
Survivors include his wife Belva of the home, son Jeffery, and three daughters, Becky Block, Jana Robinson, and Kyla Groom and their families and a sister Mary Cheek.
