Born the second of eight children to Moses Shirley and Dicy Peninah Boyd.
On 25 Dec 1892 in Jefferson County Martha married
Perry Hatchett, son of Charles W Hatchet and PegA.

In the 1900 Census, Martha Hatchett reported 5 births, two living.

Children:
1. Bernice Edna Pigg 1895 – 1976 East St. Louis, St. Clair Co.
2. Lenord Raymond 1900 - 1949 Benton dies in coal mine cave in

Grandchildren:
Dorothy E Pigg 1916 --
Wilfred L Pigg 1917 – 1982 East St. Louis
Martha Bell (Pigg) Gallant 1926 - 2003
Martha Lee (Hatchett) Goff 1930 – 1999 Benton

Martha Shirley Hatchett died at age 27 from occipital cerbical neuralgia with disease of the brain. Her mother was also in Mt. Vernon at this time, perhaps to care for her and her young children. Mother Peninah only age 52 died herself within months of Martha, cause of death was malarial fever with congestion, inflammation, and mortification of stomach and bowels. Martha’s father Moses Shirley, with teenagers still in the home, would go on to remarry twice widowed Mahala (Powell) Sapp-Daily in 1903.
