Pioneer - James Doss Alexander, Jr., age 88, of Pioneer, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012 in the nursing home in San Saba. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2012 with Bob Pipes officiating assisted by Rick Austin; burial will follow in the Pioneer Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, January 22nd from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Higginbotham Funeral Home in Cross Plains.
James was born on January 3, 1924 in Bend, TX to Annie Laurie (Hughes) and James Doss Alexander, Sr. The family moved to Pioneer about 1927. James graduated from Pioneer High school in 1941. He attended Abilene Christian College on a football Scholarship until he was inducted into the U.S. Army. On March 5, 1943 he went in to active service and did his basic training at Camp Walters, TX. From there he went to Camp Butner, NC as an Athletic Instructor. James was discharged from the service in 1945. He married Martha Jean Scott in Burlington, N.C. on October 4, 1945.
After the war he continued his education, receiving his Bachelor of Science at Abilene Christian College, where he also played football under Coach Tonto Coleman, he then received his Master's Degree in Administration at Hardin Simmons University. He taught and coached at Eastland High, then coached at Cross Plains High School, where he later served as principal. He served as principal for 19 years at Clyde High School, where he retired. After retirement he farmed and ranched at Pioneer, during which time he also taught government at Cisco Jr. College. He came out of retirement for three years, serving as principal at Rising Star. James was so proud of all his ballplayers and students. He made a difference in the lives of all his students and was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was a long time member of the Cross Plains Church of Christ where he served as an elder.
He is survived by his wife Jean Alexander of Pioneer; son James D. Alexander III and wife Marla of Richardson, TX, son-in-law Ken Appleton of Corpus Christi, sister May Jones and husband D.P. of Pioneer, TX; six wonderful grandchildren, Doss IV, Jackson, Will, and Ashley Alexander; Heather Appleton Bardwell and Andrea Appleton Dysput, great grandchildren Candace and Alyssa Bardwell, four nieces and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Starr Appleton, one sister Ann Frances Fritchlee, and two cousins Jay Hughes and Jo Cullers (that were like brother and sister).
