Christian was the oldest active barber in Grand Rapids, the dean of local barbers. Christian learned the trade, at the age of 12, in the Netherlands which was his native land. At the age of 25, Christian came to the United States, he settled in Big Rapids for six years before moving to Grand Rapids. He lived on Leonard Street, near Alpine Avenue, for 37 years.
