His dad was ill for a long time. The father worked for the B&O Railroad. Daniel went to work for the B&O when he was 16. Everyone on the railroad knew Daniel was too young but they let him go to work to help support the family. Daniel worked for the B&O all his life. Had to clear up his age when he retired.
