George Thurland Chattaway, age 47, died in Newark, Essex, New Jersey on May 24, 1889. The story that his grandson Jim Eagan had was that "His mother told him that George T. Chattaway died from falling into a haystack. In his story he says that someone was trying to steal his invention of something, so they got him drunk and when he fell into the haystack they left him there and he died."
George was born in Warwickshire, England, UK on April 1842 to James Chattaway and Jemima Thonger. He married Mary Ann Brown on February 11, 1863 in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, USA. They had nine children: Edwin P. Chattaway (1863-1915), Jonathan Allen Chattaway (1865-1946), Sarah Ida Chattaway (1868-1899), William Edward Chattaway (1870-unknown), George Thomas Chattaway (1873-1941), Roland Ewer Chattaway (1878-1947), Martha W. Chattaway (1879-1960), Alice Jean Chattaway (unknown) and Florence Chattaway (1888-1888).
George Thurland Chattaway was a machinist and an inventor. He had patents on a pulley on a sewing machine and the other is something to do with a grinding machine. He was also very talented in music and played trombone with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.
George was buried on May 26, 1889 in Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn; Grave No. 9350; Block No. 27; Locust Grove Div. 2; #126396.
