Leonard was born March 31, 1935 in Portland, Oregon and grew up in the Lent's area of Portland. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1953 and married Phyllis Tannler on November 21, 1959.
In 1962, Leonard and Phyllis moved to Reno and Carson City, Nevada where he worked for the Reno Evening Gazette and Nevada State Journal. They returned to Portland in 1967 and he became a Non-Foods Manager for Safeway. From 1975 to 1993, he started and owned the Columbia News Agency and was a distributor for the Wall Street Journal, Barrons, and Investors Daily. He distributed the Portland Business Journal from 1975 to 2005.
An avid outdoorsman, Leonard enjoyed fishing and hunting in Nevada and Oregon. He was a fan of the Portland Trail Blazers and loved classic cars of all kinds, owning many of his favorites. Travel was another of Leonard's favorite pastimes. He and Phyllis took many RV trips through the Western United States and beyond. They also took cruises to the Panama Canal, Alaska, and the Caribbean, and traveled to Europe seeing Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Phyllis, his sons Mark Young and Franklin Kessler, daughter Karen McClow, his son-in-law Matt McClow, daughter-in-law Shannon Kessler, grandchildren Jackson and Anna McClow, mother Mary Kessler and brother Gary Kessler.
Leonard's strength, love for life, and humor will be missed by all those he touched in his life.
