Kevin Scott Smith, 34, of Fairmont, formerly of Elkins, passed away from this life peacefully on Friday (Nov. 22, 2013), following an extended illness.
He was born on Oct. 11, 1979, in Odessa, Texas, the son of Debra L. Smith of Elkins and Ricky D. Smith of Odessa.
He was a graduate of Elkins High School, Class of 1997. He studied graphic arts at Fairmont State University. Kevin worked as a sales associate for Mountaineer Mart, and served as president of the West Virginia Environmental Council. He was an artisan and owner of North Central Neckorations Jewelry. He was an avid music lover, surrounding himself with the music he loved up until the time of his passing, and attended many concerts during his lifetime.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth M. Phares of Elkins. Also surviving are several aunts and uncles, Michael S. Phares (Katherine) of Pageland, S.C., Charles R. Phares of Hyannis, Mass., Bobby L. Smith (Jana) of Brownsville, Texas, Elizabeth J. Phares of Elkins, Annette K. Weiford (Blake) of Elkins, and Rose M. Sanders (Terry) of Bowden. Kevin also enjoyed the company of his many cousins, and especially his best friend, James E. Zabolotny, Jr.

The family will receive friends at Ford Funeral Home, DeGarmo Chapel, 207 Second St., Rivesville, on Saturday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Sunday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Michael S. Phares officiating. A private committal service will be held at a later date.
