John Zimmerman Carpenter

Birth: 1731
Bavaria (Bayern), Germany
Death: 1796
Virginia, USA

It is believed that when John arrived from Germany his name was Zimmerman and he changed it to Carpenter.

born date could also be 1734

The Carpenter Family was originally Zimmerman. 4 brothers travelled here from Germany. One settled in New Jersey (Joseph),one went to Virginia, a third went to Middletown, NY and the fourth went back to Germany. Apparently, Zimmerman is the English equivalent of Carpenter and that is how/why the name changed. This information and Joseph's line is documented in The Michael Shoemaker book by Jacob Shoemaker and William Blair. Unfortunately, they did not name the other brothers. Does anyone have another source that corroborates this?

John was a musician and showman.
Letter Kevin Davis, 9 Jan 1995, says that there is a possibility that John Carpenter was previously married and that at least some of the children listed were by the first wife. This would explain the difference in age of John and Drucilla and the birth dates of the children.
John Carpenter married Drusilla Tomlinson b. 1739, d. 1774 in 1761, at Wills Creek, Frederick, MD, USA and they had the following children;
JOHN CARPENTER was born in 1762.
ROBERT "ROBIN" CARPENTER was born in 1763 in Belmont, Pleasants County, (W)VA; died February 1850 in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, OH.
ANNA CARPENTER was born in 1766.
DANIEL CARPENTER was born in 1769.
JOSEPH CARPENTER was born on 20 Feb 1771.
THOMAS CARPENTER was born in 1772
