Ernest was born in the Kingdom of Hannover, now part of Germany, and emigrated with his parents and siblings, in 1853. The family settled at Big Run, in Liberty District, just outside Cameron, WV. After his father's death in 1895, he took over the family farm and became quite prosperous. Before his death, he had added to the family holdings, including two additional farms. In 1872, he married Anna Wilhelm of Wheeling, Ohio County, WV, whose own parents were German immigrants. They had 11 children, one of whom died in infancy.
Ernest sent his three youngest sons to medical school and saw them become successful physicians. Three other sons received the farm each worked, and his daughters married well.
In July, 1921, he was working on the home farm stacking hay. He suffered sunstroke, fell from the stack, broke his neck and died a few days later.
The children were George; Franklin "Frank"; William M; Mary (married Luther Mathews); Florence Elizabeth "Flora" (married James Frank Duncan); Edward Percy; Emma Blanche (married John Ruckman, MD); John Lewis; Charles Frederick; Walter Harold and Raymond Grant.
