Born in Falkirk, Scotland in 1902 of Richard Weir Muirhead and Jean Gibb Robertson, Helen immigrated to Canada 15 October 1912 with her mother and five siblings, joining her father and another sister in Hamilton Ontario, their home being situated a few city blocks from the brow of the Niagara Escarpment. Three more children were added to the Muirhead family once they settled into their new home. Helen married George Edward Copeland in Hamilton, 28 July, 1921 and they had two daughters, Jean Evelyn and Ann Blair born in 1922 and 1925 respectively. They then moved across the US border to resettle in Yates, New York where their two sons were born, Robert G in 1927 and David R in 1930. Helen did not work outside the home but stayed at home to raise her four children while George was employed initially as an assistant plumber and later as a gardener.
