MELTON, CALVIN N. JR. Calvin N. Melton Jr., 91, a 79-year resident of San Diego County, died January 25, 2013, in San Rafael, CA. In his last years, he was in the care of his devoted sister, Ellen, in San Rafael. Calvin, a 1939 graduate of San Diego High School, served aboard a U.S. Navy ship transporting planes from the west coast to aircraft carriers in the Pacific during World War II. He was employed by E&J Gallo for most of his working life, but his favorite job as a young man was navigating ferry boats between Coronado and San Diego before the bridge was built. He was a championship softball pitcher in local city leagues before and after the war and was especially proud of throwing a no-hitter against men half his age when he was 50. His adored wife Anna Catherine preceded him in death, as did his son, Robert David, and his two brothers, Robert and David. He is survived by his longtime loving companion, Dottie Wickner, now of Phoenix, AZ, by the children of his two brothers, Holly, Dana, Mark, Greg and David of Northern California, and Rob of Portland, OR, and by his sister, Ellen Melton. Calvin was a dedicated member of the Normal Heights United Methodist Church, where a Memorial Service was held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 15, 4650 Mansfield St., San Diego. Inurnment followed at Greenwood Mortuary.
