Annis Newton was born 2 May 1754 in Groton, New London, Connecticut, the daughter of Samuel Newton junior (Oct 1722-Jan 1812) and Deborah Williams (Sept 1720-August 1783), both of Connecticut. She married James Smith (born in 1752 in Groton, New London, Connecticut) in 1777 in Groton. They were the parents of five children:

[In 1813] James Smith, wife, and sons Latham A. and Isaac, with their families, came from Connecticut. The ten children of L. A. Smith now (1871) reside within the county, and two are prominent physicians. James S. died at the age of 83, and his wife at that of 82. (From "The History of Susquehanna County" p 133)
