The funeral for Charles J. Waken, 90, will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Debbie Bourland will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Army. Arrangements are by Brown-Cummings Funeral Home.

He was born Nov. 15, 1919, in Omaha, Neb., to Charles H. and Anne Domet Waken and died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at his home. He was a 1942 graduate of Oklahoma A&M with a bachelor of science degree in commerce. He joined the Army, serving in the European Theatre during World War II. He was stationed in Belgium, France and England. He was awarded two Bronze Stars for his service as a master sergeant.

He married Jean Bridson Kelly March 19, 1945, in England. Following his discharge, they made their home in Enid. She died in 1970. He married Ann Sewell Morgan in 1973. She died in 1999.

He was in the grocery business with his father and two brothers from 1947 until he retired in 1996. He was active in Enid Symphony Orchestra, an adviser for Score and treasurer for Greater Enid Arts and Humanities Council. He also was a tutor through First Presbyterian Church, where served as deacon. He worked with Garfield County Election Board and was a member of Enid Lions Club and Enid Kiwanis Club.

Surviving are five sons, Charles Waken III and Chris Waken, both of Atlanta, Greg Waken of Enid, Michael Waken of Drummond and Robert Waken of Broken Arrow; three daughters, Pamela M. Waken of Bossier City, Pat Waken of Yukon and Christine M. Quinton of Bethany; two brothers, George Waken and Bill Waken, both of Enid; one sister, Gloria Morrison of Dustin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to both wives, Jean and Ann, and companion, Verna Swaim, he was preceded in death by one brother and one granddaughter.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Saturday Manna at First Presbyterian Church. Condolences may be made at
