Preston J. Friend died at his residence, in Tipton, on Monday, July 29, 1867, in the 69th year of his age.
He was born in Maryland, Oct. 27th, 1798. At the age of 33 he became a subject of saving grace and united with the Methodist Protestant Church, (now called Methodist Church) of which he remained a consistent and honored member until the day of his death, with the exception of some time that he stood connected with the Methodist Episcopal Church, in its early organization in town, until a favorable opportunity offered to return to the church of his choice; he mostly holding an official relation.
In 1832 he roemoved to Morrow county, Ohio, where he remained until Oct. 1839, when he with his family emigrated to Iowa and settled near Tipton. As soon as the county seat was located here he went into business in town and for the last twenty-one years has been one of the firm of Friend & Culbertson. He was prosperous in business and accumulated a considerable amount of this world's goods. He was generous in supporting the institution of the church.
For thirteen years past he has experienced much bodily affliction, but retained his strength of mind until nearly the last. During his last severe affliction, which lasted 11 days, being strong in faith serving the Lord, he was enabled to rejoice that the time of his departure drew near.
He was first married in Ohio to Martha Nichols, but some years ago he buried her and four children, two sons and two daughters. He was again married married to Elizabeth Lee, in 1850, who still survives him, and did all in her power to make him comfortable through his afflictions. He has left an affectionate wife, one son and one daughter, to mourn his loss.
In his death the community has lost one of its most prominent citizens, his partner in business an excellent financier and a man of firm integrity, the Masonic fraterninty one of its most consistent members, the church one of her strongest advocates of mutual rights, and the family its head.
