James was a Methodist preacher and an active Mason. James donated the land for the Minter's Chapel Methodist Church and graveyard near DFW, see jamescate.txt In 1850 Dallas Co. Texas census. In 1880 Tarrant Co., Texas census Left Tennessee in ca 1840 and went to Missouri. moved to Dallas Co., Texas in December 1845. Moved to Tarrant Co. Texas in 1851. James Cate received two tracts of land totaling 640 acres by virtue of being a Peters's Colonist. The land was issued 4/1/1850. Colony Cert. #40 Vol. 2, 480 acres was surveyed 7/28/1851 and recorded 3/3/1852. Colony Cert. #40 Vol. 2, 160 acres was surveyed 7/29/1851 and recorded 3/4/1852. Both tracts were located near Bear Creek in Tarrant Co. Peters' Colony was the name applied to a North Texas empresario grant made by the Republic of Texas to W.S. Peters and others. The contracts were given 8/30/1841- 1/20/1843. Most Colony land certificates granted 640 acres to a family and 320 acres to a single man. In 1/1850, the Texas State Legislature passed a law granting all heads of colony familes 640 acres and to all single men, 320 acres. Cate possible other daughter b 2/17/1857; d 8/5/1877, buried in Minter's Chapel Cem.. Methodist Episcopal Church, Mason James Cate's application for Peters's Colony land on file at the Texas General Land Office indicates that he emigrated to Texas in 1845 with his wife and children. James Cate was born in White Co., Tennessee. Moved to Missouri abt. 1840. Then moved to Texas in 1845. Living with son Robert in 1900.
