Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, WI) - January 14, 2006
Deceased Name: Mullen, Clyde "Moon"
MINERAL POINT - Clyde "Moon" Mullen's engine couldn't be overhauled again and stopped running on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at the age of 89. God called him home because heaven needed a good mechanic. Clyde was born on Aug. 10, 1916, the son of Clyde and Eula (Tippett) Mullen in rural Shullsburg. He graduated from New Diggings High School in 1934. On Oct. 19, 1939, he married his high school sweetheart, Jenalda Poppa. In 1942, Clyde and Jenalda came to Mineral Point in a brand new Willys Americar with baby son, James and went to work for J. E. Engels Automotive. Clyde opened his own garage in 1955 and began a legacy of being a true mechanic for the next 50 years. Clyde saw his first stock car race in 1948 and was hooked forever after; owning, building and working on numerous race cars. He was a pioneer on race car ideas, especially 6 cylinder Chevys on tracks that are long gone throughout Southwestern Wisconsin. Clyde also was very good at tractor pulls and antique tractors and engines. He served on the Mineral Point City Council and the Iowa County Board. He is survived by his wife, Jenalda; three sons, James of Delhi, Iowa, Bob (Teri) of Ill. and Donald (Diane) of Mineral Point; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rena (Dale) Amacher of Fort Atkinson; two sisters-in-law, Beryl Mullen and Doris Coulthard, both of Shullsburg; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Howard Mullen; brothers-in-law, Thomas Coulthard, Paul Poppa and Charles (Mona) Poppy; and three grandchildren, Holly, Heather and Thomas Mullen. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at 11 a.m. at the GORGEN FUNERAL HOME in Mineral Point. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the GORGEN FUNERAL HOME.
