Joe Mullen was an 1899 graduate of Delavan School for the Deaf. He learned carpentry, shoemaking, cooking and ironing at Delavan. He was also a gymnast and baseball player.
For the last 36 years of his life his sister, Katherine Haffele provided a home for Joe. Joe lost his hearing due to an illness when 6 years old. Joe had suffered a broken hip which nearly disabled him.
When he was 92 he suffered another broken hip an was in the Hazel Green Hospital prior to his death.
