Born and raised in Utica, NY, Gene was a son of Franklin and Clara Andes King. He attended an agricultural college and received his certificate which permitted him to test milk. He spent a few summers working on farms including chicken farms. His dream was to own and operate his own farm, specifically in animal husbandry, but that dream never came true.

He joined the U.S. Navy before Pearl Harbor and served aboard the USS Vincennes and the USS Nevada as a coxswain. After he was discharged he married and had a son, Robert, settling in Inglewood, CA. He went to work for the Douglas Aircraft Co., and in 1951 the company transferred him to Reno, NV during the development of the A-4D fighter plane. He loved fishing and hunting and the Wold Series baseball games, and socializing.
