Alfred A. Hoffy was born in London, England in 1796. He was a British soldier who fought in the Battle of Waterloo as an aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington. Major Hoffy was later given command of a regiment during Napoleon's exile on St. Helena Island. In 1830, Alfred disposed his military commission and became an American citizen. Alfred married Emma Jane Patterson in Quaker City, Pennsylvania about 1835. Together, this loving couple had eight children: Martha, Alfred, Anna, Emma J., Amanda Louisa, Adele Helen, Adelaide Madge, and Henry C Hoffy. Alfred was a gifted artist and lithographer. He worked with P.S. Duval, a print publisher, and Huddy & Duval's "U.S. Military Magazine" in Philadelphia. Alfred also published his own works in the "Orchardist's Companion," an American Horticultural Publication in 1840. In 1860, Alfred A. Hoffy published "The North American Pomologist, the first work solely dedicated to American "Native Fruits." Alfred and his family moved to Brooklyn, New York about 1867. Alfred died March 10, 1872. He is buried with his wife in Green-Wood Cemetery, Lot 18120, Section 152.
