Omer was born 27 May 1880 and died 29 April 1969. He was the fifth of six children (four boys and 2 girls) of Thomas Reese Gregory and Martha Jane McDaniel. His siblings were James W.H., Milford, Sidney, Everett and Effie Mae. He spent his younger years in the Ladoga (Montgomery County, Indiana) area.
He went to work for the Haynes/Apperson automobile company in Kokomo, Indiana in 1902 as a painter. This was when automobiles were hand-painted. Haynes was the first automobile in the United states. Omer painted cars until he was 72 years old.
He married Rhoda Caroline (Carrie) Amos, on 17 Fed 1904, in Kokomo. They could not have children, but adopted Mary Lou Ottinger in 1927. Omer and Carrie lived in Lebanon, Indiana from the early 19020s until his death in 1969.
