William Curtis "Whitey" Auld, Sr. Born January 21, 1926 in Wilmington, NC to William James Auld and Sarah Stella Conroy. Whitey, as he was know by one and all, attended New Hanover High School where he played varsity baseball, football and basketball. After graduating high school in 1944, he served the remainder of WWII in the Navy and played on exhibition baseball teams. He then attended Wake Forest College, earning a degree in Physical Education in 3 years with honors. It was while at Wake Forest that he met his future wife, Bette, to whom he was married 64 years. Bette proceeded Whitey in death earlier this year. He worked for GMAC for 38 years, making many friends throughout NC, West Virginia and Louisiana. Whitey loved ACC sports, particularly his Wake Forest Demon Deacons. He liked nothing better than talking sports and state of the world with his family and friends. He also enjoyed playing a round of golf, a skill he honed in retirement. Always the optimist, he believed there was nothing one couldn't do if they applied themselves. He was kind, honest and trustworthy - all attributes that endeared him to those he met through the years. He is survived by his children William C. Auld, Jr and wife Judy, Martha Anne Auld, Mary Beth Auld; grandchildren Dr. Corinth A. Auld and partner Steve Hazlip, Mary Erin Jennings, JD, and husband Vance; great grandchildren Riley and Macie Jennings; nieces Becky Coward and Anna Jane Knight; and scores of beloved cousins and friends. A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., Raleigh Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, 7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh. Burial to follow at Raleigh Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family would request donations be given to a Transitions Life Care of Wake County or the SPCA of Wake County.
