Mary Kirk Allbritain was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Breckenridge, Texas, to Richard Lee Allbritain and Lucile Kirk and died Aug. 6, 2012, in Crestview.

Her father was worked on one of the early oil fields and over the years continued in the oil and gas industry. This led the family to live in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri.

Upon graduating from Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., Mary enlisted in the Navy and became a WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Her basic training was at Hunter College, New York City and Milledgeville, Ga. Subsequently her tours of duty were the Naval Air Stations in Santa Ana, Calif., and San Diego.

Upon her separation of service in the spring of 1946, she rejoined her family, which had moved to Washington. She also began her career as a government employee. In 1948 she married a former Marine officer, Sidney Epstein, a native Washingtonian and newsman. The marriage ended in divorce in 1956.

Subsequently, Mary continued with the federal government in the U.S. Geological Survey, living in Colorado, Oklahoma and Louisiana until her retirement there. She had lived in Florida for the past 25 years.

She leaves a daughter, Diane Morales, and granddaughter, Alix Morales, of Colliersville, Tenn., both teachers. In addition are her sister, Julie A. Welsh, of Murrieta, Calif., nephews Luther Welsh, Jr., Dr. Richard K. Welsh and wife Christine, and James H. Welsh and wife, Stephanie. Grand-nieces and grand-nephews are Katie Welsh Kinnaman, 1st Lt. Ryan K. Welsh, USMC, Lindsey Welsh di Grazia, James H. Welsh Jr. and Ian C. Welsh. Cousins are Clara Van Winkle and Phyllis Anderson.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude for the loving care and devotion of the nurses, CNAs and staff at Shoal Creek Rehabilitation Center. Also, for the friendship offered by the caregivers at Elder Services, with a "dear friend" visiting weekly. This was a great comfort to her family members who lived so far away.

Funeral services are at 11a.m Saturday, Aug. 11, in the chapel of Brackney Funeral Service. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior. Burial will be at Barrancas National Cemetery Monday, Aug. 13 at 1:15p.m.

All funeral arrangements provided by Brackney Funeral Service of Crestview.
